Biography

Vladimir Lapovok was born in Moscow in 1933. He studied at the Moscow secondary arts school under the Surikov Art Institute, and graduated from the applied arts department of the Moscow Institute of Textile Industry in 1960. In 1968 he finished a full course of studies at the Lunacharsky Institute of Theatre Art in Moscow with the diploma of stage director. For many years he worked as a stage designer; in several instances he was both the designer and director of a production. Vladimir Lapovok is a townscape, animalist and still-life artist; he was also active as a book illustrator. The artist has been taking part in exhibitions from 1958 onward (the first was Forty Years of the Komsomol, held at Moscow's Manezh Exhibition Haft). He joined the Theatre Workers Union in 1961 and the UNLSCO International Federation of Artists in 1978. Major exhibitions in recent years include: Malaya Gruzinskaya at Manezh (1991); one-man shows in 1993 and 1994 ( both at the "Ostozhenka 16" Gallery), and The Golden Brush at the Central Artists' House (1994); exhibitions in Toulouse (France) in 1995 and 1996.
Vladimir Lapovok's works are held by the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum in Moscow, by museums in Yaroslavl and by private collectors in Moscow and abroad.
