Biography
Ivan Murphy was born in Quebec City in 1964. After completing high school and CEGEP studies, he attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Design, 1992. While working as an exhibit designer, Ivan began teaching part-time at NSCAD in 1995 to present, and full time at the Community College from 1996-1998.
Ivan's first group show was at galerie Germain des Pres, Quebec, in 1989. Showing occasionally during his studies at NSCAD, Ivanís first solo show was at the Khyber Centre for the Arts in July 2000. Subsequent exhibits include venues such as Argyle Fine Art, Secord Gallery, and the Anna Leonowens Gallery 2. Fundraising shows include the Khyber Fool- Hearted Gala, and the Annaís Birthday Bash. Ivan will be providing work for both fundraisers again this year.
Most of Ivanís acrylic paintings reference landscape; present work uses landscape or fragments of landscape to frame different narratives. These themes include observation on the intellectual perceptions and physical realities of wilderness, or as a mythopoeic environment for exploration of family topics.
