Why he took up painting:
Al-Amir always travelled with his trader father along the coast of East Africa. The colours of the coastline, sky and buildings fascinated him and he sketched the Swahili and Arabs of the Kenyan coast as he watched his father trade with them. Because of his early passion for art, Al- Amir grew to be a fine, self-taught artist with a great depth for perspective as his coastal scenes depict. The street scenes that he paints reflect the Arab and Latin influences in architecture along the Kenyan coast.
